What is public housing?

Public housing is designed for people with low incomes, seniors, and people with disabilities at rents they can afford.

Public housing comes in all sizes and types, from single-family houses to high-rise apartments. Local public housing agencies (PHAs) manage public housing properties.

Find out if you are eligible for public housing

Find and contact your local public housing agency to find out if you are eligible. Your eligibility will be based on:

  • Your annual gross income
  • Whether you qualify as a senior, a person with a disability, or a family
  • U.S. citizenship or eligible immigration status

How to apply for public housing

The application process is different in each state and you may need to apply in person. Your local PHA will explain the process and tell you what documents to bring to your appointment.
